A number of things regarding looking after babies have not changed for several thousand years. But, happily, technology has enhanced one facet significantly. Baby monitors permit for remote observing and listening that provides security and safety for the baby and peace of mind for moms and dads.

As could be expected, since consumer electronics have evolved to such an extent over the last 10-20 years, baby monitors are now likewise more advanced. Several have developed into a blend of security camera/TV, microphone and speaker, and computer all rolled into one. Not only do they have the basic audio and/or visual ability that is fundamental to any baby monitor, but with extra motion sensors and other features they boost safety and security greatly beyond prior generations.

The most standard types provide simply audio. They’re mainly a microphone that transmits sound to a speaker in another room. But even these low-end varieties can make it that much more handy and helpful than models of the past. The speaker, for starters, no longer is just a little box that sits on a table. It can be in the form of a cell phone style unit that’s easily transported in your pocket or on your belt.

More costly yet more useful models add a visual aspect. The camera is focused on the baby’s nursery or crib. Here too, the receiving component can be of one of two basic varieties. The less costly models feature a compact TV-style receiver that can be conveniently rested on a living room table or kitchen countertop. Others are a mobile monitor the size of a cell phone.

A further facet that has improved considerably through time is the range. Just the same as with portable phones, higher frequency baby monitors now permit the receiver and transmitter to be much further apart than in the past. No longer limited to several yards distant within the home, the mobile receiver can be located anyplace outside where your telephone will reach. Similar to telephones, interference is just about a distant memory, as well.

Still other types incorporate internet and computer technology. These varieties can transmit audio-video to your computer in the house or at work miles away. While not meant to allow parents to leave a baby alone, it makes it easy for the parent at work to know right away what the one at home sees or hears.

Even more advanced units are available that sense the baby’s motions and send an alarm when they reach certain parameters of force or distance. That is very beneficial for babies who are a little fidgety when sleeping or when you want to be aware when they’re waking up.

Physically watching your baby around the clock is almost an impossibility. Fortunately, baby monitors have come along to help to fill the gap. From basic units to the sophisticated baby video monitor, there’s one for every need and price range.
